As the county town, Taunton has always had a special place in Somerset's history, but it's had a turbulent past - most notably in 1685 when the Monmouth Rebellion was brutally quelled by Judge Jeffreys' Bloody Assize in the Great Hall of Taunton Castle.
But Judge Jeffreys wasn't the only one to send people to the gallows and until 1867, it was the primary place of execution in Somerset.
